RENT-A-GIRLFRIEND  IS BACK WITH MORE OF THE SAME

The biggest anime of Summer 2020 is back with a season 2, and not much has changed, for better or for worse.

When twenty-year-old Kazuya Kinoshita is dumped by his short-term girlfriend, Mami Nanami, he decides to use a girlfriend rental service to recover. Choosing Chizuru Mizuhara, his one-time date turns into a continuing series of near-misses and unfortunate events after his family and friends are lead to believe that Mizuhara is Kazuya’s actual, real girlfriend.  A family vacation, a clingy girl named Ruka, a beach trip with friends, a secret kiss shared between exes, a silent fourth girl entering the fray, and an incredibly awkward Christmas encounter round out Season One’s offerings, ending with Mizuhara deciding to quit the rental service to pursue acting, and Kazuya’s ex girlfriend Mami learning the truth behind the relationship.

Season Two finds us watching Mizuhara’s comedic performance in a stage play where Kazuya is in attendance. Without spoiling the plot, what follows is a lot more of the same whacky hijinks we saw in the first season: Chizuru tries to move forward (while continuing to use Kazuya as an emotional crutch), Kazuya gets in his own way, Ruka continues to cling on, Mami is still the incarnation of Satan reborn, and the show is corny as it ever has been.

All this to say, if you enjoyed Season One, you’ll love Season Two, but I wouldn’t expect the plot to move forward too much – the characters and their actions make sure of that. The season hasn’t reached its end yet, with the fifth episode having released this past week, but the episodes thus far have been great, if a little meandering at times. Whatever the season holds in store, any fan of the romantic comedy genre should find something to enjoy here.

While there are certainly better shows in the genre out there right now, Rent-a-Girlfriend is far from a miss, and it certainly is aware of its own cheese and camp. Our first impression of Season 2 is a solid 6/10: above average, with it’s own share of issues.
