Crunchyroll Expo 2022 Day One!

The convention’s first day is a promising start to a anticipated event.

Crunchyroll Expo’s registration was a fast, fantastic example of how events should be handled in a post-Covid world.

10:00AM marked the beginning of the convention, and the air was heavy with excitement. Stepping out of my air-conditioned hotel into the hot, San Jose summer left me feeling less-than-enthused, but as I rounded the street corner, I was met with a wave of cosplayers, anime fans, and a general public bracing in line, badges tightly gripped in hand, and their anticipation ignited my own. As I made my way to the end of a line that seemed to wrap around the attached Marriot hotel, I expected to be met with an hour’s wait, but I was surprised when I made it into the building after only ten minutes of waiting. Event coordinators were present the entire way through, directing folks through lines for registration, assistance, and health check status, and no line held enough people – or few enough staff – to cause a traffic jam. Staff were careful to check vaccination cards and IDs rapidly, and assist attendees with inquiries in a timely manner.

Within no time at all, I made it through security and, having picked up my badge and completed my health check the day prior, I was immediately exploring. A cursory glance at the holoMeet Experience Zone  confirmed my impression that the secret to the success of this year’s convention was its embrace of the VTuber landscape.

A crowd waits outside the holoMeet Showcase Theater for a multimedia event hosted by A-Chan and others from holoJP.

From there, I made my way upstairs, noting Playstation advertisements in the form of statues depicting characters from their most recent large titles. From right to left stood a lifelike Norman Reedus as “Sam Porter Bridges” from the hit Kojima Productions game Death Stranding, a realistic cordyceps zombie from The Last of Us, and an adult Ellie from The Last of Us Part II.  The Playstation promotion extends across the entire convention floor in the form of QR codes that grant you an entry in a contest to win a PS5.

Once I’d gotten my fill of selfies and b-roll footage, I made my way onto the Central Shopping District (held behind the hall doors) for further photos and b-roll footage before the area was flooded with shoppers when it fully opened at eleven. Walking around the Arts District, noting all the pins, prints, and postcards I wanted was a fun distraction from my job gathering content, and before long, the doors were opened to the public and everyone set their attention to shopping.

After some shopping of my own – including, but not limited to: t-shirts, gym clothes, blind bags, and additions to my Hatsune Mike figure collection – I met up with some friends and we wandered over to the Super Arcade while we waited for Sal to finish his meeting with Anya Malfissa of Hololive Indonesia.

The only event at CRX2022 I would describe as “lackluster”; the Super Arcade felt anything but.

Across the room, my eyes met a game I had played a dozen times before, but had never learned the name of; a game I affectionately describe as “Whack-a-Mole but with Japanese music.” After an embarrassingly bad round, I surrendered the game to the next person in line, who had approached questioning how to play it. But that brief bit of fun halted, when we found that the Super Arcade held nothing else to our interest, and we set off once again. Meeting up with Sal, we left the convention in search of food, and spent an hour-and-a-half shoveling brisket in our mouths at the closest Gen location. Korean barbecue has always been a favorite of mine, but after a day of walking, shopping, and interviews, all on an empty stomach, it tasted better than it ever had.

Unfortunately, circumstances held that I missed the Atarashii Gakko!  concert, but by all accounts, it was a hell of a show. I hope this event made some new fans for them, I highly recommend their music. We ended the day by playing a couple games in Sal’s hotel room before I adjourned to mine to write this post. I’m excited to see what tomorrow has in store!
