Anime NYC: What to Expect
The East Coast’s biggest anime convention is bigger than ever
The American Manga Awards kick-off an exciting weekend of announcements and more.
Tonight signals the official-unofficial start to this year’s AnimeNYC convention, with the first ever American Manga Awards. In partnership with Japan Society, AnimeNYC set out to make the American Manga Awards the first ever awards ceremony dedicated to manga creators, writers, publishers, translators, and everyone else who helps make manga available to an American audience. The invitation-only ceremony is happening right now, and it’s already shaping up to be an historic event. This being the first annual installment, it will be interesting to see how the mood changes for the next one.

The actual official kick-off party, Shonen Pump, has already started but it won’t really fill in until in the Lila Acheson Wallace auditorium opens its doors and the crowd floods out. The 21-and-over party is being hosted at Sugar Mouse with a special guest list packed to the brim with cosplayers. The party doesn’t stop at AnimeNYC though, with three more lined up at different spots to close out each night. But when it comes to entertainment, there will be very little reason to leave the Javits Center all weekend.
Friday begins a completely packed schedule of events, with the highlight of the day being the first ever US concert by Japanese hip-hop duo Creepy Nuts — most notable for their work on anime themes, like the [Daten] and [Stayin’ Up Lullaby] for Call of the Night, as well as [Bling-Bang-Bang-Born] from Mashle: Magic & Muscles, and [Otonoke] from Dandadan @ 6:30PM on the Main Stage.
Friday is also the day that AnimeNYC hosts the hololive STAGE World Tour ’24 – Soar concert, starring AZKi and Tsunomaki Watame of hololive, Moona Hoshinova and Kobo Kanaeru of hololive Indonesia, and Takanashi Kiara, Ninomae Ina’nis, and Hakos Baelz of hololive English. The concert starts at 9:00PM on the Main Stage.
Dandadan | Science Saru
Saturday starts with the premiere of Yukinobu Tatsu’s Dandadan, produced by studio Science Saru. The screening will involve voice actors Shion Wakayama and Natsuki Hanae, as well as musician Kensuke Ushio.
Following that is another hololive production. hololive English -Justice- will host their panel, “Special Mission in New York”, featuring Elizabeth Rose “Bloodflame”, Gigi Murin, Cecilia Immergreen, and Raora Panthera.
Rounding out the day is the world premiere of Terminator Zero. Showrunner Mattson Tomlin and director Masashi Kudo will be joined by members of Production I.G. to debut the show as well as provide some behind-the-scenes looks at the development process.
The convention closes out on Sunday with a panel from the folks at the hit “Dungeons and Dragons” podcast Critical Role, a spotlight panel on voice actor Toshio Furukawa, and a spotlight on One Punch Man voice actor Max Mittelman.
One more after-party, this time at the Whisper Room at 7:00PM and the convention will officially be over for the year.
Inbetween all of that is nigh-endless cosplay, merchandise, fan getherings, and more! So get ready for an unforgettable con weekend!
